Website privacy notice
The pages are stored with Amazon Web Services in the EU and delivered through Amazon CloudFront, a network of servers that sends each page from a location near you, mostly in Europe; see who processes data for us for the few outside Europe.
We keep no log of visits to this site. To protect it from attacks, Amazon CloudFront's firewall counts the requests from each IP address over a few minutes and blocks an address that sends too many, or one on Amazon's list of addresses known for abuse. It holds your address only while it counts, for a few minutes, and keeps no record of it or of what you asked for.
If you open a document someone shared with you by link, that page and the encrypted document are requested from us. The document itself comes from our service, which does not log your IP address; to stop abuse, it counts opens per address for a minute using a one-way code made from it, and that count then expires. We cannot read the document without the link.
When you send the waitlist form, our waitlist service uses your IP address to slow down repeated sign-ups from the same connection. It keeps the address only in its short-term working memory, which is cleared when that copy of the service stops or its memory is full. It does not write the address to the waitlist or to its own logs.
This website sets no third-party trackers, no advertising pixels, and no cookies.
Waitlist notice
Purpose: to tell you when Pocket Aurora Papers launches, and to ask for feedback before launch.
Data collected: your email address, your country and any comment you leave, together with which version of the page you saw, the date you joined, the time you agreed, whether and when you confirmed, the status of your sign-up, a code for your unsubscribe link and, until you have confirmed, a scrambled (one-way) code of your confirmation link. After deletion, a copy can remain in our backups for up to 35 days.
Where it is kept: in our own waitlist service, in our Amazon Web Services account in the EU. Amazon Web Services hosts it for us. Confirmation emails will be sent through Amazon Simple Email Service, part of Amazon Web Services. Until that is live, sign-ups from Germany and Austria are not accepted or stored.
How long we keep it: until 31 December 2027, then it is deleted automatically. Deletion can take a few days to complete.
Confirmation: once confirmation emails are live, sign-ups from Germany and Austria must be confirmed by email. Sign-ups that are not confirmed are deleted automatically 30 days after they are made.
Withdrawal: you can withdraw at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send you, or by writing to hello@pocketaurora.com.
Joining is voluntary. You do not have to give us anything to read this website. Without an email address we cannot put you on the list.
Run by: Daniel Man, at Kamerunská 4/601, 160 00 Praha, Czech Republic.
Emails you send us
If you write to hello@pocketaurora.com, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it only to reply and to deal with what you asked.
Mail to this address is received and stored by Zoho Corporation B.V., Beneluxlaan 4B, 3527 HT Utrecht, the Netherlands (Zoho Mail), with the mailbox hosted in its EU data centres.
We keep the conversation while it is open and delete it 12 months after the last message.
Why we use your data, and on what basis
Data protection law lets us use personal data only for a reason the law recognises (a "lawful basis"). These are ours.
- The waitlist. We use your email address and the other waitlist details because you agreed to it when you ticked the box (consent, GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw at any time.
- Protecting the site. The firewall's use of your IP address protects the site from attacks and misuse. This is what the law calls a legitimate interest: ours is running a reliable website that is protected against misuse (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Slowing down repeated sign-ups and messages. The use of your IP address by the waitlist and the contact form protects them from automated or abusive use. This is our legitimate interest in keeping the list accurate and both services available (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Emails and contact-form messages you send us. We use them to answer you. Where you ask us to act on your data, such as deleting your waitlist entry, we do so because data protection law requires us to answer such requests. Otherwise it is our legitimate interest in replying to people who write to us (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
Where we rely on legitimate interest, you can object, as explained under "Your rights".
Who processes data for us
Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL, 38 Avenue John F. Kennedy, L-1855 Luxembourg, handles data on our behalf (in data protection terms, it is our processor). It stores the pages and the waitlist in the EU, delivers the pages through Amazon CloudFront and protects them with its firewall, and will send the waitlist confirmation emails through Amazon Simple Email Service. Its data processing terms allow it to use this data only on our instructions.
The provider of our mailbox, named under "Emails you send us", holds the mail you send us.
Problem reports you send from the app go to our support desk, Zoho Desk, run for us by the same Zoho Corporation B.V. in its EU data centres. We keep a report until the problem it describes is closed, and delete it 12 months after that.
We do not sell your data. We do not give it to anyone other than the processors named on this page, unless the law requires us to.
Transfers outside the European Union: to deliver a page quickly, CloudFront handles your request at the server nearest to you, which can be outside the European Union, in any country where Amazon has one. Someone in the EU is normally served from the EU. That request includes your IP address and the address of the page. For such transfers, Amazon Web Services relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses (the standard legal safeguards for moving data out of the EU), which are part of its data processing terms. You can ask us for more information about these safeguards.
Zoho may give its group company in India, Zoho Corporation Pvt. Ltd., access to the mailbox to provide the service and technical support, under a group company agreement based on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies. Its pages run no scripts, except the page that opens a shared document, which decrypts it in your browser.
Nothing is stored on or read from your device beyond what your browser does by itself to show a web page, such as keeping a copy in its cache. Our pages also tell your browser to open this site only over a secure (HTTPS) connection for the next two years, and your browser remembers that.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- ask what data we hold about you and get a copy (access);
- have wrong data corrected (correction);
- have your data deleted (deletion);
- ask us to limit how we use your data while a question about it is settled (restriction);
- object to any use based on our legitimate interest, after which we stop unless we have strong grounds that override yours (objection);
- withdraw your consent to the waitlist at any time. This does not make our use before the withdrawal unlawful;
- receive your waitlist entry in a common file format a computer can read, or have it sent to someone else (data portability).
To use any of these rights, email hello@pocketaurora.com. We reply within one month. If a request is complicated, we may need up to two more months, and we will tell you within the first month. We may ask you to confirm a request from the email address it concerns, so that we do not give your data to someone else.
You can also complain to a data protection authority, in particular in the country where you live or work. In the Czech Republic that is the Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů (Office for Personal Data Protection), Pplk. Sochora 27, 170 00 Praha 7, uoou.gov.cz, posta@uoou.gov.cz. We would be glad if you wrote to us first, so we can try to put it right.
No automated decisions
We make no decisions about you by automated means alone, and we do not build profiles of visitors or waitlist members.
Children
The waitlist is not directed at children under 16. If you are under 16, please do not join. If you think a child has joined, write to us and we will delete the entry.
What you put in Papers
You are responsible for what you scan, import, forward to your Papers address, listen to and share. Use Pocket Aurora Papers only for documents and texts you are allowed to copy, such as your own papers, letters you received and your own notes. The law where you live may not allow copying a whole book, even one you own.
Listen reads a document aloud for you on your device, for your own use. Do not use Papers to share or publish works that belong to someone else, as pages, as a link or in any other form.
Changes to this page
We will update this page when what we collect or how we use it changes, and change the date below. We post every change on this page. Once we can email the waitlist, we will also email people on the list before a change that affects how we use their data takes effect.
