Pocket Aurora Papers

Share a document with a link that stops working

An attachment never expires. Every copy you send stays in someone's mailbox, and in every backup of it, for as long as they keep it.

Pocket Aurora Papers is in development and not in the App Store yet.

Why attachments linger

A rental contract sent to a landlord, a passport copy sent to an agency, a medical report sent to an insurer: each stays in their mailbox, and often in a shared one, long after it was needed.

A link that runs out

A link is different. It can stop working after a few days, or after it has been opened a set number of times, and you can take it back if it went to the wrong person. A password adds a second thing the recipient must have.

What a good share link does

It is encrypted before it leaves your phone, so the copy held by the service cannot be read without the link. It tells you plainly what it records about the person who opens it.

How Pocket Aurora Papers does it

Send a document as a link that stops working after the time you choose, up to 30 days, or the number of opens you choose, up to 25, whichever comes first. Add a password, or revoke it at any time; deleting the document revokes it too. The document is encrypted on your iPhone and the key is in the part of the link your browser never sends to us, so the copy we store cannot be opened without the link. Anyone who has the link can open it, and the page that opens it comes from us, so this is not end-to-end encryption. Once revoked, a link cannot be opened again, though a download it had already started can finish within five minutes. The privacy page says what we see when a link is opened.
